How Max Griffin Became Max “Pain” Griffin (Part I)
I won’t lie. Young Max was a beast.
I started martial arts when I was 4 and competed at the highest levels (for my age) until I was 13. I even got invited to compete at the Olympics.
But unfortunately, I became the man of the house when I was 13. My dad moved away and he was the one who pushed me to be the best.
So I took a break from martial arts to take care of my two younger brothers while my mom worked to provide for us.
Because I no longer had a father figure, I started to get in trouble. In high school, I was running the streets. But even though those were troubled times, I learned a lot of life lessons.
Next week, I’ll talk about my defining moment. When I was 21 I had a “calling”. I knew I was going to be a fighter from that day forward.
Training Camp Thoughts
It’s my 6th year in the UFC.
And this Saturday, I’m entering my 14th fight against a respected OG in the game, Tim Means.
And even though I’m no spring chicken anymore, I’ve never felt stronger and faster.
Max 2.0 is here.
And I know a lot of people wonder this. But yes, I still get nervous before fights. Kobe still got nervous before big games in his prime. So if the Black Mamba fought against an uneasy mind and nerves, I can too.
At the end of the day, it’s how you deal with it and show up.
For my past 5 fights, I’ve been working with my mental coach, Danny Patterson. My mind has never been more clear. I’ve been honing and envisioning my responsibility to become the best fighter on the planet.
To stay accountable to this mission, I do a daily 3-win exercise. Every day, I write down 3 positives of the day and 3 things I need to work on.
If you get 1% better each day, think about what happens in a year. You probably wouldn’t even recognize the person you were before!
This mindset is what gets me up in the morning even when my body wants to hide from a hard workout day.
So I’ve been hammering my conditioning for 6 months straight. Swimming, biking, assault bike, and running 5 days a week. Building my aerobic capacity to the max so I can go hard for 15 minutes.
Mentally, I’m feeling like a samurai sword and I’m ready to unload my arsenal of weapons.
I feel completely in-tune with my body and emotions. And once you take the time to learn what’s going on and why, that’s how you level up.
I’m ready to paint a picture of violence and the Octagon is going to be my canvas this Saturday night! 👊👊
MPG Book Recommendation of the Week:
Breaking The Habit of Being Yourself: How to Lose Your Mind and Create a New One by Dr. Joe Dispenza
Quote from book: “Your past shortfalls can be traced, at their root, to one major oversight: you haven’t committed yourself to living by the truth that your thoughts have consequences so great that they create your reality.”
Mental game is not only crucial in fighting, it’s crucial in life.
This book shows you how your thoughts, actions, and habits create your personality and overall self. Dr. Dispenza dives deep into the science of how thoughts create energy.
If you don’t control your thoughts, your thoughts will control you!
Personally, this book helped reinforce my own beliefs that your mind is powerful and can physically change your environment. Meme of the Week 😂

Max Pain Griffin CBD
I’ve got 15-20 training sessions a week, so I need to prioritize recovery and rest.
CBD helps reduce the inflammation in my body so I can conquer the next day and get the most out of my workouts.
I’ve tried a lot of other CBD products out there with no success. So instead of going through brand after brand, I decided to make my own.
This way, I can guarantee I’m sourcing the best ingredients. And I know what’s going in each gummy, oil, and topical.
