How Max Griffin Became Max “Pain” Griffin (Part II)

15 years ago at a reggae music festival in Humboldt county, my life changed.

At this point I was a 21 year old without a direction in life. But at this festival, I had my “calling”.

I was going to be a fighter.

Soon after, I signed up for my first MMA fight in Springfield, Oregon. And the people in that town were anything but welcoming.

From the moment I showed up in that town, I got racist vibes. Microaggressions everywhere.

I was the new black kid coming to beat up their hometown hero after all.

And when I walked out for my bout, I got greeted by the echo of boos. But I’m not afraid of enemy territory. It motivates me.

My opponent across from me was soaking in the cheers. Trying to feed off their energy.

He was 2-0 at the time with 2 one-punch KOs. Everyone thought I was going to another body for him and another pitstop for his hype train.

But I had other plans.

I sent that guy to another dimension. In less than a minute too. Those fans went silent real quick.

And of course I was hyped up. I ran face first into the cage and headbutted it. I wanted to see the disappointment on the audience’s faces.

A wave of loud boos and yelling followed and reverberated through the venue. My opponent’s mom even yelled a racial slur at me when I walked out of the cage. You can probably guess what. Thanks Karen, hope you enjoyed the show.

But from that moment on, I knew I was a bad muthaf*cka!!

And it taught me how to thrive in enemy territory. I’ve had repeated moments like that Springfield show during my UFC career.

Mike Perry in Orlando.

Erick Montano in Mexico City.

Thiago Alves in Brazil.

The list goes on.

It’s been 15 years since my debut, and we’re only getting started. That moment created Max “Pain” Griffin, but Max 2.0 is here now.

Post-Fight Thoughts

Max Griffin and Tim Means, UFC Vegas 63

I had the honor of sharing the cage with Tim Means on UFC Vegas 63.

Overall, I felt great about my performance. My team and I devised a specific plan to win and I executed it to a tee. Everything we drilled during camp was put on display.

I tried my best to get Tim out of there in the first. I thought I had it. I dropped him a few times with some hard shots, but he somehow survived. Tim is tough, man.

When I dropped him in the first round, my hand felt funny. Immediately, I knew something was wrong.

I wanted to tell my corner, but didn’t want anything to interfere with the fight. No way was I going to let the doctor stop this prematurely.

I just needed to dig deep and tough it out.

After the second, my hand felt like mush. I listened to my corner and did what I had to do to win.

And man, did it take long to go to the judges. I knew I was dominant the whole fight and won without a doubt. But the split decision was bullshit.

I knew it, and Tim knew it. You could see the expression on Tim’s face when a judge gave 2 rounds to him. Tim even came up to me after and said I beat him 30-27. Much love and respect to Tim 🙏. I can’t say enough good things about the guy.

But my main concern after the fight was my hand. When the doctor took my glove off, the bone was sticking up like an inch out of place. He grabbed it and snapped it back in like a broken toy, haha.

I really hoped it wasn’t anything serious. But this week my concerns were confirmed. For four weeks, I’ll have a few pins in place 🦾.

But after I’m all healed up, I’m ready to get back in the Octagon.

I’m on a 5-fight win streak and I’m looking to make it six. Let’s go!

My Coach Is Fighting For His Life Right Now

This last fight was dedicated to Dave Marinoble.

Dave Marinoble has been a Sensei, Coach, and Father Figure to me for over 15 years. I wouldn’t be the man I am today without his guidance.

Unfortunately, Sensei Marinbole was diagnosed with the incurable and debilitating disease, ALS. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages from 2-5 years from the time of diagnosis.

So for the past few weeks, I’ve been raising money for him and others fighting this death sentence. And I want to give a shoutout to everyone who’s donated to the cause. With the support of many communities, sponsors, friends, family, and fans, we’ve raised about $10,000 so far.

Max Pain Griffin CBD

MPG Gummies and Tincture

I’m a huge fan of taking a holistic approach to my health, I don’t trust big pharma.

So you already know I’m going to be using CBD to reduce the pain and inflammation in my hand. F*ck addictive pain medications!

And I’ve tried a lot of other CBD products out there with no success. So instead of going through brand after brand, I decided to make my own.

This way, I can guarantee I’m sourcing the best ingredients. And I know what’s going in each gummy, oil, and topical.
